Italian Serie A Review: Napoli And Juventus Open Healthy Lead On The Chasing Pack After Latest Victories

League leaders Napoli and nearest challengers Juventus have opened a significant lead on the chasing pack after their latest wins over Hellas Verona and Cagliari respectively.

Second half goals from Kalidou Koulibaly and Jose Callejon propelled Napoli to a 2-0 win over Hellas Verona to go into the break as league leaders while Juventus needed a 74th minute strike from Federico Bernardeschi to secure a 1-0 win at stubborn Cagliari.

The win ensured that the top two opened an healthy lead of eight points over the chasing pack after the indifferent results posted by former Serie A title chasers like Inter Milan, AS Roma and Lazio in recent weeks.

Lazio have leapfrogged city rivals Roma into 4th spot after Italian international striker Ciro Immobile scored four goals in a 5-2 win at SPAL 2013.

Immobile has now scored 20 league goals which is more than any league goal tally managed by players from the top 5 European leagues.

Roma were unable to secure the 4th place after going down 2-1 to 10-man Atalanta at the Stadio Olimpico.

Andreas Cornelius and Martin De Roon gave the visitors a 2-0 lead inside 20 minutes before the latter was sent off on the stroke of halftime.

Atalanta thereafter defended stoutly for the maximum points despite the fact that Edin Dzeko briefly gave his Roma side a little hope by pulling a goal back 11 minutes after the interval.
