International Friendlies: England Hold Germany As Brazil, France Record Impressive Victories

England and Germany rekindled their old rivalry at the Wembley Stadium on Wednesday night as both sides played out an entertaining goalless draw.

Gareth Southgate would be the happier of the two managers after his depleted side was able to hold the world champions who controlled proceedings for the majority of the game. The closest either side came to breaking the deadlock was when Manchester City forward Leroy Sane struck the post with a very good first half effort that rendered England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford helpless.

Apart from avoiding defeat, England and manager Southgate were able to hand debuts to Nigerian-born striker Tammy Abraham, Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Jack Cork.

In the pick of the other friendly games, France beat Wales 2-0 with goals either side of halftime from Antoine Griezmann and Arsenal striker Olivier Giroud while Neymar (penalty), Marcelo and Gabriel Jesus were on the scoresheet in a 3-1 victory over Japan. Tomoaki Makino got what proved to be mere consolation for the Asian side.
