Inside AFCON: Egypt Head Coach Javier Aguirre Threatens to Quit

Javier Aguirre, Head Coach of The Pharaohs, has said he will leave his post if he fails to deliver the Africa Cup of Nations trophy to the host team.

El Vasco, as he is popularly known, is set to lead the North African side in their campaign for an eighth AFCON title, with the tournament being held in the country for a record fifth time.

“We don’t think about anything right now except the opening game against Zimbabwe. I am only focused on the tournament and I am bound with the Egyptian Football Association with a contract,” Aguirre told reporters.

“However, I will definitely leave if I found myself incapable of achieving the targets of Egypt,” he added.

Egypt are grouped alongside Zimbabwe, who they open the tournament with on Friday, June 21, DR Congo, who they battle on Wednesday, June 26, and Uganda, who they face on Sunday, June 30, in Group A.
