INSIDE AFCON 2019: Super Eagles Observe Final Training With Complete Squad Ahead of South Africa Clash

CAIRO – The Super Eagles held their final training session today ahead of their 2019 AFCON quarterfinal tie against South Africa with coach Gernot Rohr able to call on the full complement of his 23-man squad for the first time since the start of the tournament in Egypt.

Eagles captain John Mikel Obi who had sat out the team’s training ahead of the 3-2 last 16 win over Cameroon appeared to be fully over the knock he picked in the loss to Madagascar as he joined his teammates at the El Sham Sporting Club training ground.

Two other players to have recovered from their respective injuries, fullbacks Shehu Abdullahi and Jamilu Collins were also fully involved in today’s training albeit with heavy strapping to their left thighs.

Nigeria has struggled with a spate of injuries and illnesses since the start of the tournament.

Odion Ighalo, Ahmed Musa and John Ogu were reported to have fallen ill just before the start of the tournament while Collins picked up a knock in training on the eve of the tournament that has seen him fail to make a single appearance so far.

Abdullahi then picked up his injury in the tournament’s opener against Burundi before Obi’s injury against Madagascar.

Nigeria take on South Africa on Wednesday at the Cairo International Stadium for a spot in the semifinal at the 2019 AFCON.

Having failed to defeat the South Africans in five consecutive meetings including falling to a loss and being held to draw by Bafana Bafana during the qualifying series, Rohr would hope that having a fully fit squad of players would help seal Nigeria’s place in the last four.
