Super Eagles and Super Falcons players dominate the list for the 2019 Men and Women’s Player of the Year awards released by continental football governing body the Confederation of African Football on Sunday.
Retired Super Eagles striker and 2019 AFCON Golden Boot winner, Odion Ighalo is joined by Lille’s striker Victor Osimhen and Leicester midfielder Wilfred Ndidi in the list for the prestigious African Player of the Year award.
Osimhen who has enjoyed a prolific 2019 for the Super Eagles, Belgium’s Sporting Charleroi and new club Lille is also nominated in the Youth Player of the Year award where he will contend with Villarreal’s Samuel Chukwueze and fourteen other promising African youngsters for the award.
Three-times CAF Women Footballer of the Year Asisat Oshoala makes her customary appearance in the women’s category where she’s a heavy favourite to claim a fourth gong after a fantastic season for Spanish Side FC Barcelona Femení in the Primera División.
Rivers United Chiamaka Nnadozie and US-based Uchenna Kanu also make the list of ten female footballers in the running for the award alongside reigning queen Thembi Kgatlana.
Super Eagles coach Gernot Rohr makes the list for African Men’s Coach of the Year after leading Nigeria to a third-place finish at the 2019 AFCON tournament as did former Super Falcons coach Thomas Dennerby who won the 2018 African Women’s Nations Cup and also led the team to their best finish at a FIFA Women’s World Cup in eighteen years at this year’s edition in France.
Both the Super Eagles and Super Falcons were also nominated in the African Men’s National Team of the Year and African Women’s National Team of the Year categories respectively.
There was, however, no place for domestic players in the Inter Club Player of the year award.
The winners of the awards on Tuesday, 7 January 2020 during the 28th edition of CAF’s annual football awards at the Citadel Azure, Hurghada, Egypt.
