Akwa Ibom state-financed female football team, Ibom Angels beat Abia angels on Thursday to progress to the quarter-finals of the 2019 Women’s FA Cup sponsored by Aiteo.

The Orange Angels got the breakthrough in the 24th minute through midfielder Omosuyi Ayo before new signing Blessing Okon doubled the lead in the 29th minute to ensure her side’s qualification to the next round of the competition for a third consecutive time.

Abia angels pulled one back through Mercy Itimi to half the deficit but the Uyo-based side held on to their lead.

The 2-1 victory for Ibom Angels means that the two-time finalist will still have a stake in the tournament, as Coach Morufu Adeyemo began his first competitive game in charge of the club on a winning note.

Thanking God after the game, club captain, Ability Okon described the victory as “God’s favour,” claiming it would not have been possible if not for God’s interference.

Reacting also to the victory, Glory Ogbonna of Ibom angels said, “I want to tell you that the FA cup competition is where unknown teams can bring down the big teams, but I want to thank God we scaled through the hurdles successfully as we will not give-up on this year’s Aiteo cup”.

In the other fixtures that went on simultaneously around the country, FC Robo played out a 1-1 draw against sunshine Queens at regulation time, but Sunshine Queens triumphed 5-4 on penalties thereby eliminating FC Robo Queens.

Unfortunately, Olori Babes got involved in an auto crash on their way to face Edo Queens and are currently receiving treatment.

The quarterfinals will have Ibom Angels, Nasarawa Amazons, Confluence Queens, Bayelsa Queens, Rivers Angels, Delta Queens, Sunshine Queens and any of Edo Queens and Olori Babes.
