Sacked Napoli coach Walter Mazzarri, had hoped to face Barcelona in Wednesday’s UEFA Champions League tie with Victor Osimhen in the squad.

Osimhen was not in Napoli’s squad against Genoa at the weekend and the result proved to be disastarous for Mazzarri, who has now been sacked.

The Nigerian had been on international duty with Nigeria at the AFCON 2023 where they finished runners-up.

Slovakia’s Francesco Calzona has now been appointed on a six-month deal till the end of the season.

According to La Repubblica, via CN24, Mazzarri had wanted one last chance to prove himself.

“I was hoping to manage against Barcelona with Victor Osimhen on the pitch,” Mazzarri was quoted to have said.

Osimhen has made four appearances in this season’s Champions League, scoring one goal and has one assist.
