German Cup (Round of 32) Review: Bayern Overcome Leipzig Via Penalties To Secure Last 16 Spot

German champions Bayern Munich are through to the last 16 of the German Cup but they didn’t achieve this on their own terms as they needed penalties to beat their stubborn hosts RB Leipzig.

After a goalless first half, Leipzig were dealt a big blow after midfielder Naby Keita was sent off for two yellow cards but that didn’t stop the team from taking a shock lead through Emil Forsberg. Bayern immediately levelled matters against the 10-man team through Thiago Alcantara and Leipzig thereafter held on for the remainder of regulation time as well as extra time to force penalties.

After four successful spot kicks each for both sides, Dutch winger Arjen Robben stepped up and converted a fifth one for Bayern but Timo Werner failed in his own attempt thereby giving Bayern a 5-4 win on penalties and a spot in the last 16.
