Free Scoring Super Eagles Defender Eyes Goals Record (AUDIO)

Super Eagles defender Semi Ajayi has set his sights on eclipsing his best ever goals return after he notched up his fifth of the season in West Bromwich Albion’s 2-0 win over Luton at The Hawthorns on Saturday.

The victory snapped a seven-game winless spell for the Baggies who returned to the top of the Championship and also claimed a first home clean sheet of the campaign.

Former leaders Leeds relinquished top spot following a shocking 1-0 defeat at home by relegation-threatened Wigan who signed Nigerian defender Leon Balogun on loan on deadline day although he wasn’t listed for the tie.

Ajayi who had missed Albion’s last two games powered home a 70th-minute header to make the game safe for the home side after they had taken the lead through Donervon Daniels’ first-half own goal.

Reflecting on the win, Ajayi told the club’s website that the victory will fuel their belief to push for a return to the topflight as Albion head into the final sixteen league games of the season.

“With the run we’ve been on it was important to get that first win so to have that now will hopefully give the lads some confidence to take into the rest of our fixtures now,” he said.

“Our performances haven’t been that bad but we haven’t got the results to go with that, so hopefully now we have the result we can get our confidence and put a run together. We have to take each game as it comes, approach each game individually, and see what happens from there.”

The Nigeria international defender who joined Albion from Rotherham in the summer is just three goals shy of his highest goals total which he achieved for his former side last season.

And Ajayi who has nine caps for the Super Eagles hopes he can surpass that tally with goals that help bring Baggies victories.

“It would be nice to beat last season’s tally because that’s the most I’ve ever got. I’m on target at the moment, so hopefully, I can keep scoring goals that help the team pick up three points every week. That would be nice,” he added.
