France 2018: Late Ajibade Strike Sends Falconets Into Quarters

Rasheedat Ajibade scored with virtually the last kick of the game to send Nigeria’s female U-20 team, Falconets into the first knockout stage at the ongoing FIFA World Cup tournament in France following a 1-1 draw with China People’s Republic (China PR) in their final Group D game.

The two-time finalists knew a draw against China  would be enough to secure a place in the quarterfinals but suffered a scare when the Asians took a 41st minute lead courtesy midfielder Zhang Linyan.

China held on to that lead until the last minute of added time when FC Robo of Lagos striker Rasheedat Ajibade scored Nigeria’s equaliser with a close-range finish.

In the other group game, Germany maintained their hundred percent record with a 3-2 victory over bottom team Haiti.

With the draw, Nigeria will face Group C winners Spain in the second quarterfinal game of the tournament on Thursday, while three-time champions Germany play Japan on Friday.
