Flying Eagles In Pole Position For AFCON Tournament After Mauritania Draw

Nigeria’s national U20 team, Flying Eagles are close to booking a spot in next year’s African Cup of Nations (AFCON) tournament in Niger Republic after they played a 1-1 draw with hosts Mauritania in the first leg of their final round of qualifiers.

Paul Aigbogun’s men took the lead on 25 minutes through Niger Tornadoes star Ibrahim Babawo but the hosts were level within four minutes.

Nigeria thereafter wasted several opportunities to take the lead as both sides settled for a share of the spoils ahead of the second leg match scheduled for the Agege Stadium in Lagos on Saturday.

Mauritania have been the giantkillers in these qualifiers after they eliminated Morocco and Guinea in the previous rounds.

Nigeria defeated Seychelles 3-2 on aggregate in the last round.
