Fiorentina captain Davide Astori has died in mysterious circumstances.

According to his club, the 31-year old Italian international defender gave up the ghost in his hotel room in the early hours of Sunday.

The club made this known via their official Twitter handle.

“Fiorentina are profoundly shocked to have to announce the death of captain Davide Astori after a sudden illnesso.” the tweet said.

A club spokesman while confirming the news to AFP revealed that the cause of death is unknown ahead of an autopsy.

Davide Astori was in Udine ahead of Fiorentina’s league game with their hosts Udinese.

The aforementioned game has however been postponed alongside other Serie A games on Sunday.

Astori started his career at AC Milan before turning out for other clubs like Cagliari and AS Roma.

The 14-cap Italian international joined Fiorentina in 2015.
