Finidi Dispels Pressure, Targets Trophies At Enyimba (AUDIO)

Enyimba coach Finidi George says the People’s Elephant will ‘do all our best’ to ensure they ‘win trophies’ while he is in charge of the club.

The former Super Eagles winger, who was last month handed the reins at Enyimba on a two-year contract, has hit the ground running, guiding the two-time African champions to a 1-0 win against Diambars in the CAF Confederation Cup preliminaries at the weekend in Senegal.

Asked if he is under pressure to deliver trophies at a very ambitious Enyimba side, the 50-year-old tactician said: “No, but I think I know it’s, if not the biggest club in Nigeria, one of the biggest in Africa.

“I know the task ahead of us. We will do all our best to make sure that we win trophies. So, we will see how the season goes, but I can assure that we are ready.”

A proponent of an entertaining style of play, the former Ajax and Real Mallorca star says he will bring free-flowing football to Enyimba provided the playing turfs around the country permit it.

“Definitely, we’ll try and play (entertaining) football,” the 1994 AFCON winner promised. “I think football has evolved.

“We all watch the Premier League, so, we see how clubs play, and these players try to emulate as well. So, we try to caution them.

“If the field can permit us to play that free-flowing football, we’ll do that. If we go to a stadium where it is not possible, then we’ll try to adapt to the new situation and try and get the best out of the players.”

The most successful Nigerian club side, Enyimba have won 2 CAF Champions League titles – the only club in the country to lift the trophy, 2 CAF Super Cups, a record 8 league crowns and 4 Aiteo Cups, amongst other laurels.
