FIFPro Hand FC Ifeanyiubah Global Transfer Ban

Nigeria Professional Football League side FC IfeanyiUbah have been handed a global transfer ban by the Fédération Internationale des Associations de Footballeurs Professionnels (FIFPro) over the club’s longstanding failure to pay its players wages.

FIFPro, the international association that oversees and advocates for professional footballers’ welfare revealed the ban on the Nigerian club and four other African clubs on their Twitter handle on Tuesday.

The ban follows a June 2019 warning to footballers to avoid signing for FC Ifeanyiubah, Tunisian side Club Africain, Morocco’s Chabab Rif Al Hoceima, Zambia’s Lusaka Dynamos FC and Botswana’s Black Forest FC who were accused of “repeated non-payment of salaries”.

With the clubs having failed to regularise payments to their playing staff, FIFPro issued an updated advisory announcing a global transfer ban on five African clubs including FC Ifeanyiubah.

“Further to the warning we issued last July, transfer bans have been handed to the following clubs in Africa: Morocco Chabab Rif Al Hoceima; Zambia Lusaka Dynamos FC; Botswana Black Forest FC; Zambia FC Nkana; Nigeria FC IfeanyiUbah,” the association wrote on Twitter.

Owned by billionaire oil and gas mogul and serving Senator, Dr Patrick Ifeanyi Ubah, the NPFL club which is named after its patron has been bogged by allegations of owing players’ salaries over the years.

Players of the Nnewi-based side cried out in December of 2016 after they were owed salary arrears and two years later Olamilekan Adeleye unilaterally terminated his contract with the club over claims of unpaid wages.

FC Ifeanyiubah who currently occupy 12th position on the NPFL log are yet to react to the ban. They host Lagos side MFM in a matchday 22 fixture on Sunday.
