Falconets Crash Out Of World Cup In France

Nigeria’s national female U20 team, Falconets have bowed out of the ongoing FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup tournament in France following their quarterfinal defeat at the hands of Spain.

The European champions defeated two-time finalists Nigeria 2-1 at the Stade Guy Piriou in Concarneau to book a spot in the last four for the first time.

The Iberian side dominated the first half and deservedly took a 2-0 lead at halftime courtesy goals from the Barcelona midfield duo of Aitana Bonmati and the tournament’s leading scorer Patricia Guijarro, who has now scored five goals.

Nigerian forward Peace Efih pulled one back on 57 minutes but the West Africans struggled to fashion out clear-cut chances in the bid to get a second goal that would have forced extra time.

The Spanish team were largely untroubled for the rest of the game thus sealing a semifinal spot for the first time in their history.
