FA Cup: Arsenal Defeat Portsmouth To Reach Quarterfinals

Two goals either side of half-time saw Arsenal beat League One side Portsmouth and reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.

Pompey gave a good account of themselves at home in Fratton Park but went into the break trailing to Sokratis Papastathopoulos’ volley from Reiss Nelson’s cross.

Eddie Nketiah bundled home from close range to wrap up the victory six minutes after the restart and seal Arsenal’s progress to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2016-17 when they won the cup.

The victory saw the Gunners bounce back from a dispiriting loss to Olympiakos that eliminated them from the Europa League

The defeat is the first for Portsmouth at Fratton Park since September 2019 against Southampton in the Carabao Cup (4-0) and ended their 19-game unbeaten run at home.

The rest of the fifth-round ties will be played on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday due to the short winter break in the Premier League, with the draw for the quarter-finals taking place on Wednesday when holders Manchester City visit Sheffield Wednesday.
