Holders Portugal have been eliminated from the European Championship after Thorgan Hazard’s thunderbolt secured a 1-0 victory for Belgium and a place in the last eight.

Hazard shot Belgium into the lead from range three minutes before the break and although Portugal threatened and came close to an equaliser, hitting the upright in the second half, Roberto Martinez’s side held on to win.

Portugal depart the tournament in disappointing fashion but talisman Cristiano Ronaldo leaves having secured a number of milestones including setting the record for most goals in tournament history and breaking the men’s international goals record.

Belgium, the number one ranked team in world football will meet Italy in the last eight.
