Enyimba Captain Excited At Super Eagles Call

Enyimba FC striker Mfon Udoh has expressed delight at being invited among 30 players to the Super Eagles camp ahead of Nigeria’s 2018 Championship for African Nations (CHAN) qualifier.

The record Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) top scorer has found the back of the net 10 times for the people’s elephant this season and has been rewarded with a call up by Chief Coach Salisu Yusuf, as the Super Eagles gets set to face either Togo or Benin republic in August.

Speaking to busybuddiesng.com in a phone interview, Mfon acknowledged that it’s been two years since he was last invited to the national team and so is keen to prove his quality while in the camp which resumes on July 16.

“The last time I got a national team call-up was I think 2015,” he said. “It shows I’m back to shape and I promise I’m going to keep that flag flying.”

Nigeria failed to qualify for the first three editions of CHAN before winning bronze in 2014 under the late Coach Stephen Keshi and getting knocked out in the group stages in 2016 with Sunday Oliseh in charge.

Enyimba’s captain, Udoh, is however of the opinion that the NPFL “has improved a lot”, and this gives the current Nigerian side a slight edge at next year’s tournament.

“You can see the big names that have been invited to camp,” The former Akwa United player, said. “With the good coaches that we have already, I think the team is going to blend, and we see ourselves qualifying.”

The 2018 Africa Nations Championship takes place in Kenya from January 11 to February 2. The competition is exclusively for players who ply their trade in their home league.
