Enyimba Apologize to Photojournalist for “Unauthorized Use of Image”

Enyimba Football Club of Aba have communicated an apology to a Nigerian Sports journalist and photographer, Modo Victor Ekene for using his pictures without prior authorization.

Ekene had taken to Twitter on Tuesday to air his grievance with the Nigeria Professional League (NPFL) side for erasing his logo from a picture he had taken of players during action between the club and MFM FC on matchday 1 of the 2018/2019 abridged NPFL season where the People’s Elephant beat the Adekoya Boys two-nil.

Modo tweeted “Dear @EnyimbaFC I am very pissed off at the moment. I have no issue with your using an image I made for a banner(I know quality pictures no plenty) but the fact that you edited out my logo on his lap, that I can’t stomach.”

The Sports photographer went ahead to point out that the photos were shared on a website controlled by his company, taking a swipe at “those that will come to lecture me on social media content sharing rights.”

Much later, the Aba-based side responded to the tweet, apologized and promised to take down the image which it had used for a matchday 4 prematch cover ahead of their game against Lobi Stars.

“Dear Victor, We apologize sincerely for the unauthorized use of your image. We work with multiple graphic designers who send in their designs before and after games.

“What this designer has done is against everything that we stand for as regards image rights and we condemn it. The graphic will be taken down immediately and the designer cautioned severely,” the club replied.

Users of the social media platform, who responded to the thread of tweets created in the process by both parties, expressed their views. While some expressed disappointment at the club’s inability to get a good photographer, one glowed with delight at the club’s response.
