Eguma Targets Playoffs, Rules Out Relegation for Rivers United (AUDIO)

Rivers United coach Stanley Eguma has said his side is now targeting a place at the playoffs of the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) this season after a 1-0 win over Niger Tornadoes in Port Harcourt on Sunday.

Wasiu Jimoh’s first-half strike handed the Pride of Rivers all 3 points in a Match Day 14 encounter at the Yakubu Gowon Stadium. With the win, Eguma’s men moved up to 5th on the Group A standings with 19points from 13 matches (with a game in hand).

A home loss to Wikki Tourists two weeks ago had sent the 3-time NPFL champions to the drop zone, but Eguma assured his team will escape relegation at the end of the current campaign.

“I want to assure you that we are not going to go on relegation,” the experienced tactician said. “Sometimes, it happens to a team. Sometimes, there are ups and downs. There are times when things will not go well like last two weeks.

“I congratulated my players because they braced up to the challenges; got the win away (against Remo Stars) and got another win here. That is to show you that we are still focused.

“We are still optimistic that we can get to the first three. That is our target now.

Eguma further expressed satisfaction with his team’s away form which has seen them record a win and 3 draws on the road.

“For our performance away from home, I don’t think we have done badly. All we need to do is to improve on our goal scoring. That is the only area we have problem.”
