Edo State Renames Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium

The Edo State Government have renamed the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium to celebrate the promotion of the state-owned football club into the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL).

The stadium will now be known as Bendel Insurance Stadium, being previously named after a two-time governor of the old Bendel State.

The Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium had been home to Bendel Insurance for a very long time and has had its own share of rough times.

In February 2009, the stadium was banned from hosting League matches for failing to meet league standards. In March of the same year, the club were on the verge of being suspended from the league due to a mountain of debts and fines.

In 2018, the stadium underwent a total renovation which saw the pitch replaced by FIFA approved astroturf with improved seating arrangements.

After an eleven year absence from topflight football, “The Benin Arsenal”, who were part of the founding clubs of the Nigeria Premier League in 1972, have been honoured by its owners by naming the 20,000 seater edifice after the two-time league champions.
