The memorabilia, medals and trophies won over the course of an athlete’s career are presumably what makes the sacrifices, injuries and hard work all worthwhile.
They supposedly remind and are an affirmation for many sportsmen and women after their careers are over, that all they had to endure was well worth it. The evidence of how good they were and how they conquered all in their path.
Well, that sentimental mushy stuff is not for everyone apparently after it emerged that a player in the victorious French national football team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia has sold his winners medal for $71,875 at an auction.
SOLD for $71,875! A 2018 FIFA World Cup gold winner’s medal awarded to a player from the champion France national football team.

The medal was one among a collection of sports memorabilia that included a pair of match-worn R9 boots that were sold at the “Sports Legends” auction curated by Julien’s Auctions.

The news was greeted by disbelief on Twitter with fans at a loss to explain why a footballer would flog a piece of history for what essentially amounts to peanuts for top-level players.
An anonymous player from France's World Cup 2018 winning squad has sold his winners medal at an auction for $71,875.
Surprising a professional footballer would think that amount of money was worth it for something like this…

@NickGossNBCSB wow, shameful..
— Zach🔺 (@zcgoss) May 22, 2020
Disgrace probably a bench player who had no game time during the World Cup! So didn’t see the value of medal!

While footballers and celebrities have routinely auctioned off items of value mostly for charity and humanitarian causes, there is no indication that it was the case in this instance.
Was it for charity or something? Doesn’t make sense to sell it for a weeks wages

The move left many scratching their heads and fueled speculation as to the identity of the mystery Les Blues player.
Could it have been a member of the backroom staff or a player who was in the squad but didn’t see a minute’s action? Moussa Dembele or Benjamin Mendy perhaps?
More than likely a coach/trainer. Normal salary and 70k is a dece wedge
— Taffy (@TaffyTips) May 22, 2020
It's Mendy
He did that after reading Lukaku's quotes— Ashvin (@El_Pistoleroooo) May 22, 2020
Dembele has sold it for fifa points

Probably Areola, never played a single minute.

Some wondered who former Liverpool player-turned pundit Graeme Souness would be thinking.
I wonder who Graham Souness thinks it is

Yet many others were more concerned about the identity of the buyer.
bought by Benzema
— chief (@sheenyspaco) May 22, 2020
Benzema blackmailed someone to sell it on the cheap 👀
— Paul Taylor (@PaulT_92) May 22, 2020
Benzema 100% bought it you just know he did
— Matt (@mattyroblaw98) May 22, 2020
I heard John Terry bought it, dressed in full France kit
— gary carter (@fatz1977) May 22, 2020
For some, it is a sign of the sorry state of football
Why anyone would want to buy someone else's medal is beyond me. It should be earned.

Some just couldn’t wrap their head around the inappropriateness of it all.
