Coutinho, Neymar Strike Late To Send Costa Rica Packing

Five-time Champions Brazil scored two late goals in added time through Philippe Coutinho and Neymar to record their first win via a 2-0 victory over Costa Rica at the ongoing FIFA World Cup In Russia.

Costa Rica frustrated Neymar and his teammates with a superb rearguard action only for the CONCACAF representatives to capitulate in added time.

The Brazilians had gone close with Manchester City striker Gabriel Jesus hitting the crossbar before Dutch centre referee Bjorn Kuipers overuled a penalty he had awarded for Neymar through the help of VAR.

Coutinho gave the Selecao the lead in the first minute of added time for his second goal in two World Cup games before Neymar added a second goal for his 56th international strike in the colours of Brazil.

The 2-0 defeat suffered by Costa Rica in the Group E clash at the Saint Petersburg Stadium in St. Petersburg means that they become the 5th country to be eliminated from the tournament after Morocco, Saudi Arabia, Egypt and Peru.

The result takes Brazil above Serbia to the top of the group ahead of the former leaders’ game with Switzerland later on Friday evening.

A draw for Brazil against Serbia in their last Group E game should be enough to secure a spot in the first knockout stage.
