Coronavirus: No Case To Cancel Or Move Tokyo 2020 WHO Tells IOC

The Tokyo 2020 Olympics is set to hold as scheduled despite the outbreak of the coronavirus which has already forced neighbouring China to postpone several sports events.

Japan has been one of several countries hit by the virus which originated from the Chinese city of Wuhan and has so far claimed nearly 1,400 lives.

There have been suggestions the International Olympic Committee could be forced to postpone the Olympics as a result of the virus but the World Health Organization has now said that there is no case for contingency plans to cancel or relocate the Tokyo 2020 Olympics over the coronavirus outbreak.

“Advice that we have received externally from WHO is that there is no case for any contingency plans of cancelling the Games or moving the Games,” the IOC Coordination Commission’s John Coates told reporters.

The Summer Olympics are due to be held in Tokyo from July 24.
