Conor McGregor and Khabib Nurmagomedov have both been handed suspensions and major fines for their part in the post-fight altercation after the UFC 229 main event that saw the Russian jump into the crowd, Sportbible’s Ryan Sidle reports.

Even in a confrontational sporting arena like UFC few fights or rivalries have been as hotly contested and personal as the one between Khabib Nurmagomedov and Conor McGregor back at the beginning of October. 

In the lead up to UFC 229 there was harsh words, the Irishman attacking a bus that the Russian was on, and more harsh words built up a rivalry that was filled with more hatred than any other.

By the time the two men actually got underway in the octagon there was genuinely no telling what would happen but Nurmagomedov’s victory, a fourth round submission, seemed pretty regular.

After the fight though things really kicked off as the ‘Eagle’ soared over the octagon and into the crowd, where he started a fight with McGregor’s stablemate Dillon Danis.

Meanwhile, the Notorious was attacked by one of the Russian’s teammates, Abubakar Nurmagomedov, who had snuck into the octagon.

Now the four men involved have been punished with Khabib suspended for six months and fined $500,000 whilst McGregor has got the same ban but a much lower $50,000 fine.

Despite Khabib’s reduced ban ending in April, when Conor’s ban will also end, UFC journalist Ariel Helwani reported that he is unlikely to fight again until October.

That’s because the Russian’s two teammates, Abubakar Nurmagomedov and Zubaira Tukhugov, were both suspended for a year for their involvement in the incident.

The Nevada commission warned that the pre-match press conference had been ’embarrassing’ and that in the future they would be punishing fighters for what they said as well as what they did.
