Commonwealth Games Update: Five Team Nigeria Athletes Crash Out

Five Nigeria athletes have crashed out of the ongoing Gold Coast Commonwealth Games in Australia.

The athletes crashed out on Thursday in three events namely boxing, gymnastics and weightlifting.

Adeola Soyoye and Osita Umeh suffered defeats in boxing while Tayo Fakiyesi finished 29th in the floor exercise and 12th on the vault in the men’s artistic gymnasium.

In weightlifting, the duo of Favour Agboro and Monica Uweh also lost.

In the 60kg category of the boxing event, Soyoye lost 5-0 to Thadius Katua of Papua New Guinea in the round of 32 while Umeh also lost 5-0 to Manoj Kumar of India in the same round of the men’s 69kg.

Nigerian weightlifter Agboro competed in the men’s 62kg and lifted 112kg in snatch before adding 156kg to it in the clean and jerk to finish fifth in the event with a total of 268kg.

Uweh, on the other hand, competed in the women’s 48kg weightlifting category and snatched 66kg before lifting 88kg in the clean and jerk. She finished in fifth spot with a total of 154kg.
