Chukwueze Is Not Mikel Obi’s Replacemant, says Rohr

Super Eagles Head Coach Gernot Rohr has shed light on speculations from some quarters that Villarreal CF B sensation Samuel Chukwueze has taken the place of Mikel Obi in the national team after he was handed jersey number 10 in his debut for the international friendly against Uganda in Asaba.

Speaking to audience on Friday morning’s Peak Breakfast with Rohr’s session which was held in Lagos, Rohr disclosed that Mikel is still in his plan stressing further that the jersey number given to Chukwueze does not negate the place of Mikel in the Super Eagles colors.

“That [Samuel] Chukwueze wore the number 10 jersey against Uganda doesn’t translate to being a replacement for Mikel. It’s just a jersey number he used. Mikel remains in our plans and we all know why he has been out of the team. Mikel will decide if he wants to play at AFCON 2019. He was omitted because of fitness issues, but we will look at his performance before the tournament.

“After the FIFA World Cup in Russia, Mikel wanted to take a break. He told me he needed rest and motivation. When he is ready, he will be back. Mikel is a fantastic captain.”

Rohr had also stressed recently that in preparation for the next summer’s African Cup of Nations in Cameroon, the Super Eagles will feature players who haven’t been given the opportunity to show their potential.
