Chelsea Dump Liverpool Out Of FA Cup, Newcastle United Hold Off West Brom

Chelsea progressed into the FA Cup quarter-finals as Liverpool suffered their second successive defeat of this season in an encounter at Stamford Bridge.

Liverpool were coming off their first defeat in the league this season and got off to a terrible start after goalkeeper Adrian’s howler gifted Willian Chelsea’s opener after 13 minutes.

The European champions rallied after falling behind and had chances of their own but the recalled Kepa Arrizabalaga presented a formidable barrier with a string of saves for the Blues.

Chelsea put the seal on their victory when former Everton midfielder Ross Barkley scored their second goal in the 64th minute after a surging run from midfield.

Elsewhere, Miguel Almiron’s first-half brace and a Valentino Lazaro strike two minutes after half time helped Newcastle United seal a quarterfinal spot at the expense of Championship side West Bromwich Albion at the Hawthorns.

The Baggies fought back through goals from Matthew Phillips and Kenneth Zohore’s added-time effort but Newcastle held on to get the win.

The encounter between Reading and Sheffield United was extended into extra time after it ended 1-1 in regular time.
