Carabao Cup Latest: Bristol City Stun Holders Manchester United With Late Smith Goal As Chelsea Beat Bournemouth To Join Arsenal, City In Semis

English Championship side Bristol City produced one of the biggest shocks of the season after Korey Smith scored in added time to stun Manchester United 2-1 in their last eight Carabao Cup clash at Ashton Gate.

United had earlier struck the woodwork twice in a lively first half that ended goalless but it was the hosts that drew first blood through left-back Joe Bryan with just six minutes gone in the second half.

That setback prompted José Mourinho’s men to fightback courtesy a vicious freekick from the returning Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who was starting his first game since his return from injury.

Bristol City were unperturbed by the equaliser from their more fancied opponents and their patience eventually paid off in added time through a Korey Smith strike.

The meeting between the two clubs was the first one in 37 years (since 1980).

Unlike Manchester United, English champions Chelsea didn’t have much problems securing a place in the last four after a 2-1 home win over fellow Premier League side Bournemouth.

William’s first half goal was cancelled out by a Dan Gosling goal on the stroke of fulltime but substitute Alvaro Morata netted 75 seconds later and deep into injury time to break Bournemouth hearts and deny them the chance to take the game to extra time.

Wednesday Results:

Bristol City 2-1 Manchester United

Chelsea 2-1 Bournemouth
