Captain Retires After World Cup Disappointment

Netherlands captain Arjen Robben has announced his retirement from international after his side failed to qualify for the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Robben made this known immediately after the game against Sweden on Wednesday night.

The Bayern Munich forward scored both goals in a 2-0 home win over Sweden but it was not enough as they needed five more goals to usurp Sweden into the playoff spot.

In his words, he said:

“It hasn’t been an easy decision but I am 33 and now must give my full focus to my club.”

Robben made his international debut in April 2003 and has scored 37 goals in 96 appearances for the Oranje.
