CAFCC: Rivers United Boost Group Stage Hopes With Victory At Bloemfontein Celtic

Rivers United are on the verge of the Confederation Cup group stage after they made easy work of South African side Bloemfontein Celtic in a 2-0 victory at the Dr Molomela Stadium on Thursday.

Godwin Aguda and Fortune Omoniwari scored in the second half to leave Stanley Eguma’s side in the driving seat ahead of the return fixture in Port Harcourt in a fortnight.

The victory all but guarantees Nigeria will have a representative on the continent this season with Enyimba’s progression in the Champions League hanging by a thread after they suffered a 3-0 pasting at Al Merrikh earlier on Thursday.

No Nigerian side has won the Confederation Cup in its present guise although Rivers United (then Dolphins FC) reached the final in 2005, losing to FAR Rabat of Morocco.
