CAFCC Review: Akwa United Dumped Out On Away Goals As Enyimba Secure Group Stage Spot

Nigerian representatives in this year’s CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC), Akwa United and Enyimba, suffered contrasting fortunes in their respective playoff clash.

Akwa United were booted out of the competition by Sudanese side Al Hilal on away goals (3-3) despite winning the second leg 3-1 earlier on Wednesday evening.

The Promise Keepers had lost the first leg 2-0 before conceding first in the second leg only to show fighting spirit by scoring three goals through Dennis Nya and Michael Ibe (2) but it was not enough to take the Abdu Maikaba-led team into the group stage.

Fellow Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) side Enyimba, however, didn’t have much problems about securing a group stage slot following their away goal win over South African side Bidvest Wits.

Both sides played out a 1-1 draw in the first leg in South Africa before they settled for a goalless draw affair in the second leg paving the way for Enyimba to join other clubs like ASEC Mimosas, Al Hilal, AS Vita Club and others in the group stage.
