CAFCC: Late Alalade Strike Sends Enyimba Into Quarters

Enyimba forward Wasiu Alalade scored late into added time to send his side into the quarterfinals of the CAF Confederation Cup (CAFCC) via a 1-0 win over CARA Brazzaville at the rejuvenated Enyimba International Stadium in Aba on Wednesday evening.

The two-time African champions knew that only a win would guarantee a spot in the knockout stage.

The Matchday 6 Group C clash against CARA was Enyimba’s first match at their home ground for three years.

Several dignitaries, including the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) President Amaju Pinnick were in attendance for the occasion.

Enyimba dominated the game from the blast of the whistle but the team struggled to convert the chances created.

The team improved after the break with captain Mfon Udoh going close by hitting the post on 80 minutes.

Enyimba’s star man hit the post again with an added time freekick and it proved to be an important contribution after Flying Eagles star Alalade scored from the rebound off his freekick.

With the victory, Enyimba finished as group winners ahead of CARA Brazzaville, who also qualify for the quarterfinals.

In the other group game, Ivorian side Williamsville missed out on a knockout spot following the disappointing goalless draw at home to bottom club AC Djoliba of Mali.

Nigerian Professional Football League (NPFL) giants Enyimba will next face Rayon Sport of Rwanda in a two-legged quarterfinal tie billed for next month, while their opponents take on USM Algers of Algeria.
