CAFCC: Enyimba Handed Tough Group Stage Draw

Enyimba FC will play two former CAF Champions League winners in the group stage of the CAF Confederation Cup following draws held on Monday at the CAF headquarters in Cairo, Egypt.

The eight-time Nigerian champions were handed a tough draw in Group A alongside two-time Champions League winners ES Setif of Algeria, 1995 Champions League winners Orlando Pirates of South Africa and four-time Libyan champions Ahli Benghazi who are making only their second appearance in the competition.

Enyimba, themselves two-times African champions, defeated fellow Nigerian Professional Football League side Rivers United on penalties to make the group stage.

Setif saw off Ghanaian side Asante Kotoko, Pirates beat Botswana’s Jwaneng Galaxy while Ahli Benghazi saw off Congolese side DC Motema Pembe in the final round of qualifying.

No Nigerian side has ever won the competition in its present form since 2004 although Enyimba has twice reached the last four and reached the quarterfinals last year where they lost to Guinean outfit AC Horoya over two legs.

Matchdays 1 and 2 will hold on 10 and 17 March respectively, while matchdays 3, 4, 5 and 6 will be played on 4, 11, 21 and 28 April respectively.

The quarterfinals have been scheduled for 16 and 23 May with the semifinals fixed for 20 and 27 June.

The final which will be a one-legged affair will be played on 10 July.
