CAFCC: Draws Throw Up Potential Enyimba, Rivers United Tie For Group Stage Spot

Enyimba will play fellow Nigerian side Rivers United or South African side Bloemfontein Celtic in the final qualifying round of the Confederation Cup.

The tie was revealed following Confederation Cup and Champions League draws held in Cairo on Friday.

Rivers United lead Bloemfontein Celtic 2-0 following the first leg in South Africa but the return fixture which was scheduled for Wednesday, 6 January in Port Harcourt, was cancelled after Nigerian health authorities declined to grant waivers to Celtic that would have seen them bypass local Covid-19 measures including a mandatory quarantine period of seven days.

CAF is yet to announce a new date or venue for the fixture but should Rivers United avoid defeat, they face an intriguing duel against countrymen Enyimba for a spot in the group stage.

The first leg is scheduled for 14 February in Aba and the return fixture fixed for seven days later.

Enyimba dropped down into CAF’s second tier competition following their ouster from the Champions League at the hands of Sudanese side Al Merrikh.

The draw ensures that Nigeria will have just one club in CAF inter-club competition this season should both sides meet in the final qualifying round.

Meanwhile, draws for the group stage of the Champions League saw Al Merrikh and Simba who accounted for Enyimba and Plateau United respectively, in the qualifiers drawn alongside defending champions Al Ahly in Group A.
