CAF Women’s Champions League: Rivers Angels Thrashed In Group Opener

Rivers Angels were handed a chastening introduction to continental football as Sanaa Mssoudy’s historic hat-trick condemned the Nigerians to a 3-0 defeat in their opening CAF Women’s Champions League Group B game against ASFAR Club at the El Salam Stadium, Cairo on Saturday.

Rivers Angels’s preparation for the first edition of Africa’s premier competition for women’s club sides was less than ideal, with the Nigerians only arriving in Egypt one day before taking to the field and they never stopped playing catch up.

Edwin Okon’s side held on for thirty minutes before falling behind to Mssoudy’s opener and the striker etched her name in the record books with further strikes after the break to record the first-ever hat-trick in Women’s Champions League history.

Moroccan side ASFAR go top of Group B with the win, level on points with Mamelodi Sundowns who beat Vihiga Queens in the early kick off courtesy of Melinda Kagadiete’s 3rd-minute effort.
