CAF CL: The Cathedral Crumbles as Lobi Stars Fall to Wydad Casablanca

Lobi Stars came into Matchday 3 of the CAF Champions League on the back of a 3-0 win at the Aper Aku Stadium home against Kwara United in the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) only to fall to a 0-1 defeat to Wydad Casablanca.

Lobi Stars began their group stage campaign with a victory over Mamelodi Sundowns, losing the second game against ASEC Mimosas in Abidjan.

The Ortom Boys were looking to bounce back from the loss to the Ivorian side against the visiting North Africans only to be disappointed at their adopted home for continental games, at The Cathedral; Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.

Both teams began the game with hopes to break the deadlock but it was Lobi who fell short when Mama Bah-Yere brought down Wydad’s Mohamed Ounajem in the box.

Mohamed Nahiri converted the spot kick to give the visiting al-ouma the lead in the 20th minute.

Both teams then had different chances to either put their team further ahead or resatore parity to the scoreline but all came to nought.

The 2017/2018 champions conceded another penalty in the 63rd minute through Kwambe Solomon but were saved by the woodwork from a poorly taken kick from Nahiri.

The match ended with the Makurdi based returning to the bottom of Group A, with 3 points from three games. They will look to get a favourable result when they travel to Morocco for the return leg against Wydad at the Stade Mohammed V on February 12.
