CAF CC: Enugu Rangers Fall to Étoile du Sahel At ‘The Cathedral’

Nigeria Professional League side Enugu Rangers International FC, Nigeria’s sole representative at the 2019 CAF Confederation Cup lost the second leg of their Group B encounter against Étoile du Sahel at ‘The Cathedral’, Nnamdi Azikiwe Stadium, Enugu.

Rangers were looking to take revenge on L’Étoile after they lost 2-0 away in the first leg last week, however, it was the Tunisian side that got the better of the hosts with goals from Maher Hannechi and Iheb Msakni which secured another 2-0 victory for them.

The Flying Antelopes looked like they were taking the bull by its horns until they were stunned in the 19th minute by Maher Hannechi who couldn’t be stopped by two Rangers’ defenders.

The home team decided to put a little pressure on their visitors with displays from Bright Silas and Kelvin Itoya, who missed an opportunity to bring parity to the game after a failed bicycle kick attempt in the 40th minute.

L’Étoile were not resting on their oars as they wanted to silence the home side. And their pressure paid off when goal scorer Maher Hannechi was adjudged to have been brought down in the box by Isaac Louté.

Iheb Msakni stepped up to take the spot-kick which he converted with a beautiful panenka.

Rangers have now lost two matches in a row to L’Étoile, who ended their unbeaten run in the tournament, leaving them in third with four points in their group.

While the loss has stifled their chances of qualifying to the next round, The Flying Antelopes will look to win their remaining matches away at Salitas and at home against CS Sfaxien in order to keep their continental dreams alive.
