Bundesliga: Sane On Target As Champions Bayern Rout Schalke In Season Opener

New signing Leroy Sane scored on his debut and Serge Gnabry bagged a hat-trick as champions Bayern Munich began their title defence with a devastating 8-0 rout of Schalke on Friday.

Last season’s top scorer Robert Lewandowski scored from the spot and Leon Goretzka, Thomas Mueller and young teenage prospect Jamal Musiala with his first for Bayern, scored the other goals.

Musiala is Bayern’s youngest goalscorer in Bundesliga history.

Sane playing his first game since his £44.7m move from Manchester City, put up an impressive showing and also weighed in with a couple of assists for Gnabry.

The pick of the assists, however, was Lewandowski’s rabona pass to Mueller for Bayern’s sixth.

The win mean Hansi Flick’s side have now won 22 games in a row.

Bayern’s record now reads 30 wins and one draw since their last defeat in any competition on 7 December. They won last season’s treble of Bundesliga, German Cup and Champions League.

Schalke, in contrast, have not won in the Bundesliga since 17 January and lost seven of their nine games following the 2019-20 season restart.

This was the biggest victory any team have managed on the opening weekend of the Bundesliga.

That was the second time Bayern managed eight goals in a game this year, having smashed Barcelona 8-2 in the Champions League quarter-finals.
