Brazilian Referee For Nigeria, Croatia World Cup Clash

World football’s governing body, FIFA, has appointed Brazilian referee Sandro Meira Ricci as the centre referee for the World Cup match between the Super Eagles of Nigeria and Croatia in Group D.

Nigeria and Croatia will do battle at the Kaliningrad Stadium in Kaliningrad on Saturday evening and Ricci, a Brazilian civil servant, would be the man at the centre.

The assignment won’t be his first at the tournament after he was the fourth official for the opening match of the tournament in Russia where the hosts thrashed Saudi Arabia 5-0 to top Group A.

Ricci will be assisted by compatriots, Emerson De Carvalho and Mercelo Van Gasse.

It would be recalled that Sandro Ricci made history by being the first referee in the world to award a goal via the newly introduced goal line technology.

This happened when he handled his debut World Cup game as a referee, the France-Honduras clash played on June 15, 2014.
