Brazil Blow As Alves Is Ruled Out Of World Cup

Paris Saint Germain (PSG) defender Daniel Alves has been ruled out of this summer’s FIFA World Cup in Russia.

Alves will miss the tournament as he requires surgery after he injured his anterior cruciate ligament while playing for the French champions in the Coupe de France final on Tuesday night.

The extent of the injury sustained by the 35-year-old right back was determined following assessment by the Brazilian medical team.

A statement released on Friday confirmed his injury status and it read: “The patient underwent close examination and confirmed the initial diagnosis of anterior cruciate ligament injury, which will require surgical treatment.”

“The technical team of the Brazilian National Team wishes Daniel Alves a prompt recovery so that his technique and leadership is back for the Amarelinha as soon as possible.” the statement added.

Brazil will begin their World Cup campaign with Switzerland on June 17 without the injury striken Alves who has won 107 caps for the five-time world champions.

Brazil will, however, hopeful that star player Neymar will be fit for the tournament having recently returned to light training after breaking a bone in his foot.
