Boateng Faces World Cup Heartache With Season-Ending Thigh Injury

Bayern Munich defender Jerome Boateng is facing a fight to be fit in time for this summer’s 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia after he was ruled out for the rest of the season with a thigh injury.

Boateng, 29, sustained the injury during his side’s Champions League semi-final defeat to Real Madrid on Wednesday.

While confirming his injury status via his Instagram page, Boateng said: “Life is full of setbacks,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Now it’s time to fight to be in Russia. I will give everything for that.” he added.

Bayern Munich confirmed Boateng suffered a “structural injury in the adductor muscle of his left thigh,” which normally requires a four-to-six-week recovery period.

Germany head coach Joachim Low is expected to release his provisional squad for Russia on May 15 but it remains to be seen whether Boateng will make the list although Fifa’s official deadline for the final squad is June 4.
