AUDIO: Nigeria On Track For World Championships Outing – Igali

President of the Nigeria Wrestling Federation (NWF) Daniel Igali says preparations for the 2017 World Wrestling Championships which takes place in Paris, France next month, are on track.

Igali disclosed that the Wrestlers have started preliminary training in their respective states but intends to bring them together in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital, prior to the commencement of the championship to fine-tune their preparations.

In an exclusive chat with www.busybuddiesng.com , the Bayelsa State Lawmaker who recently got re-elected to lead the NWF in the next four years, hinted that Team Nigeria will travel to the event with 9 wrestlers who basically excelled at the African Championships in Morocco earlier this year.

“We (the athletes) are training in Akure and Yenagoa. We hope to get them together in the last three weeks of our preparation to stay together and train,” said the Sydney 2000 Olympic gold-medalist.

“But I think we are fine. I think we’ll be alright. The athletes are understandably a bit jittery that we haven’t commenced camping in one designation but I’ve been following their training programmes and I think at this stage of our training, we are OK.

“We intend to go (to the World Championships) with the gold medalists from the African Championships but we will make exception for Amas (Daniel) because he wasn’t well (during the African championships). I think we’ll go with nine athletes,” Igali stated.

The 2017 World Championships is slated for August 21 to 26 in Paris, France.

Nigeria’s best outing in the competition is a bronze medal won by Commonwealth champion Odunayo Adekuruoye (pictured earlier) in Las Vegas two years ago.
