Audio: Debut goal delight for Ini Umotong

Nigeria international Ini Umotong marked her debut for FA Women Super League 2 side Brighton and Hove Albion with a goal on Sunday and has described the moment as “the best feeling”.

Umotong’s goal turned out to be the only goal of the match as Brighton and Hove Albion secured a 1-0 victory in their season opener against Aston Villa away from home.

“It’s the best feeling to have scored on my debut and even more so the fact that we got the three points,” Umotong told busybuddiesng.com.

“Starting the season away from home is always going to be tough and challenging but we did great as a team and it was a great performance from everyone.”

The match produced end to end action and Umotong was well in the thick of it. Her first chance to score saw her fail to make a connection with Kirsty Barton’s cross into the area.

The goal eventually came on the stroke of half time off a penalty situation. The Seagulls won a penalty but captain Sophie Perry’s effort was saved. However Fliss Gibbons returned the ball into the box for Umotong to send home.

Umotong almost got a second in the second half but her one-on-one attempt was stopped.

“There is no doubt we expect to have a strong season. We are not hiding the fact that we are going for the promotion title so we will be doing everything we can to win this league,” Umotong affirmed.

Brighton and Hove Albion will next play Durham Women FC at home on Sunday 1 October.
