All Africa Badminton C’ships: Nigeria Through to Quarterfinals After Zimbabwe Rout

Nigeria’s Badminton Team cruised into the quarterfinals of the ongoing All Africa Senior Badminton Championships with a resounding 5-0 defeat over Zimbabwe in the team event in Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

Team Nigeria continued their impressive outing despite resting two key players Anuoluwapo Opeyori and Dorcas Adesokan. 

On day one of the Africa Senior Badminton Championships, Nigeria outclassed South Africa 5-0 in their opening Group D fixture on Monday.

Yesterday, Zimbabwe’s pair of  Michelle Gazah and Raeffic  Alfonso couldn’t survive Nigeria’s duo of  Habeeb Bello and Amin Christopher who combined to inflict a 21-7, 21-7 defeat on the pair. 

In the men’s singles, Clement Krobakpor took to the court to increase Nigeria’s tally with a 21-10, 21-12 win over Mathe Thabane while Sofiat Obashola trounced Mudzamuri Tritama 21-1, 22-3 in the women’s singles. 

Krobakpor paired with Gideon Babalola in the men’s doubles to beat Dziva Ashely and Paul Kosolo 21-10, 21-10 while Amin Christopher and Chinenye Ibere combined forces to defeat the duo of Zaza Michelle and Tritama in the women’s doubles. 

South Africa will join Nigeria from Group D in the quarterfinals having defeated Zimbabwe 4-0 earlier yesterday. 

Other countries that made it to the last eight include (Uganda and Egypt) Group A, (Mauritius and Zambia) Group B, (Ghana and Algeria) Group C. 

Nigeria will hope to maintain their impressive form at the Championships with the team event scheduled to end today, Wednesday.
