Akwa United’s Ndifreke Effiong Gets Surprise Super Eagles Call Up

Akwa United utility player, Ndifreke Effiong has been handed a late call up to the Super Eagles squad that will face Seychelles in the final match of the 2109 African Cup of Nations qualifier and the international friendly against Egypt.

The Akwa United star replaces Ola Aina who picked up an injury during a Serie A match with his club side, Torino FC.

Effiong’s versatility could have been pivotal in his call up to the squad by Gernot Rohr, being able to play in almost any position.

The 2016 Rio Olympics bronze medallist, who featured as a defender for the Dream Team, now plays as an attacker for ‘The Promise Keepers’.

Effiong joined his home town club from Abia Warriors before the start of the current Nigeria Professional Football League season and few minutes before the announcement of his call up to the Super Eagles he scored the opener for Akwa United in their 2-1 win away to Heartland FC of Owerri.

The 20-year-old becomes the fourth player from the local scene to be called to the Super Eagles squad by the Franco-German gaffer just two days after Enyimba Int’l FC’s Ikouwem Udoh’s call up.
