Aiteo Cup: NPFL Goliath Stung Thrice by Locally Assembled Squad in Inconclusive FA Cup Clash

Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) giants, Akwa United are on course  to join Ifeanyi Ubah, Heartland and Go Round FC to exit the state FA Cup currently going on in the 36 states of the federation having trailed by 3 goals to ALGON Boys FC in a match reportedly disrupted by thugs in the 86th minute.

A spate of dramas was least expected prior the State FA/Aiteo Cup second round fixture between 2017 Aiteo Cup Champions Akwa United and a barely one-month-old team,  ALGON Boys FC.

ALGON Boys FC, a team assembled in March had secured a second-round tie with Akwa United after fighting hard to beat Palm Syrup FC by a lone goal in the first round of the state FA Cup tourney.

Owing to the antecedent of the competition in past years and the pedigree of Akwa United in the Nigeria Professional League in recent times, there was an air of certainty that the 2017 Aiteo Cup Champions will have their way yet again. There was no sight of an imminent upset.

But it happened.

After conceding the only goal of the first half in the 25th minute, Akwa United’s Godwin Nicholas was sent off the pitch reducing Akwa United to ten (10) man.

Akwa United exhausted all their slots for substitution before the ALGON Boys hit two additional goals in the second half with Ojo Olunreleke in between the sticks.

The atmosphere became palpable with the magnitude of the upset as thugs trudged into the pitch disrupting proceedings in the game with four minutes left.

There are speculations that the remaining minutes will be scheduled for a later date.

Barring the decision of the Akwa Ibom Football Association, this can turn out to be the first time since  2002 that the Promise Keepers will fail to progress from the state FA Cup.
