AITEO CUP: Lower League Teams Dash Continental Hopes of Two NPFL Giants

Uncertainty has caught up with the continental hopes of two Nigeria Professional League (NPFL) sides, Ifeanyi Ubah of Nnewi and Heartland FC of Owerri.

Both clubs became the first major casualties in the 2019 Aiteo Cup after crashing out at the state levels of the cup competition.

Heartland were eliminated by a Nigeria National League side, Jossy FC in the quarterfinal of the Imo State cup competition, while up-springing Udalla FC booted third-placed NPFL side, FC Ifeanyi Ubah.

Udalla executed an upset over the Anambra State Cup defending champions 4-2 through penalties after scores at regulation time stood at 1-1.

Heartland are currently sixth placed in Group B of the NPFL, seven points behind table-toppers Akwa United with just seven games left before playoffs and will need to improve their performance if they hope of representing Nigeria at the CAF Champions League.

Ifeanyi Ubah, on the other hand, will need to hold on to their grip of the third spot in Group B to brighten their chances of participating in the League’s playoffs.

FA Cup finals across different states are scheduled to hold between April 27 and 28 across the country.
