Aguero, Klopp Set Premier League Awards Record

Manchester City striker Sergio Aguero and Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp have been named Premier League Player and Manager of the month for January 2020 respectively.

City ace Aguero has now won the award a record seven times taking him past Steven Gerrard and Tottenham’s Harry Kane both of whom have six gongs.

Similarly, Klopp also set a record by becoming the first manager to win the Manager of the Month gong five times in a single season.

Aguero’s award comes on the back of a historic January where he scored six times and bagged an assist in just three appearances as he became the highest-scoring overseas player in Premier League history.

His hat-trick in a 6-1 win at Aston Villa took him past Arsenal legend Thierry Henry’s 175 goals and with his 12th treble in the English topflight, he surpassed Alan Shearer’s haul of 11.

The Argentinian scored all of City’s goals in a 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace and a 1-0 victory at Sheffield United to cap a memorable January.

Klopp, meanwhile, made it three consecutive Manager of the Month awards as he broke Pep Guardiola’s record of four gongs in a single season set in the 2017/2018 season.

The German enjoyed a flawless January as Liverpool stretched their win streak to 15 matches.

Liverpool won all five games last month including over Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United to open up a 19 points lead at the top of the table before stretching it to a record-breaking 22 points in Matchweek 25.

Klopp has now won the award 8 times moving him level with Harry Redknapp and Martin O’Neil. Only Sir Alex Ferguson, Arsene Wenger and David Moyes have won more in the competition’s history.
