NPFL: Atshimene Confident Akwa Utd Will Win Title (AUDIO)

Akwa United hotshot Charles Atshimene has said he is ‘confident’ the table-toppers will claim the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) title this season.

Atshimene fired in his 11th goal of the campaign from the spot as the Promise Keepers secured a hard-fought 1-0 win against 8-time champions Enyimba in Uyo on Sunday, to open a 5-point gap at the summit of the NPFL log.

And with six Match Days left in the current season, the Super Eagles striker says ‘the spirit in the team is good’ and believes the Uyo-based NPFL side can hold on and claim a first-ever league title at the end of the campaign.

“I’m confident that we are going to win the league, because we are working very, very hard since the start of the season. So, I believe we can win the league,” the former Warri Wolves forward told www.busybuddiesng.com.

“Everything is possible.

“The spirit in the camp is good. And by God’s grace, at the end of the season, we are going to win the league.”

With just four defeats in 32 matches this season, Akwa United lead the standings with 60 points, five points clear of second-placed Nasarawa United.

Kennedy Boboye’s men also boast a top-flight record of 18 matches without defeat, a run which was ended by Katsina United last month.

Atshimene, who was part of the Super Eagles team that faced Mexico in a recent international friendly match in USA, attributed his side’s impressive run this season to ‘togetherness, determination’ and the desire to ‘prove a point’.

“It’s a good record for us, and we are very proud of ourselves for keeping that unbeaten run for 18 matches,” the ex-Bendel Insurance goal poacher added.

“I will say that it is togetherness, determination, fighting for each other. We just want to prove a point, we want to prove ourselves. That’s what has been helping us.”

The two-time Aiteo Cup champions, who were knocked out of this year’s competition by NNL side Gateway United in the Round of 32, will next face fellow title contenders Rivers United in a Match Day 33 NPFL encounter in Port Harcourt on Sunday.
